Blackjack Card Counting - Game Strategy
Card counting in blackjack is a means whereby the player may change the game odds in his favor. Card counting is based on the principle that high cards valued at 10 points or Aces are advantageous to the player than the low cards from 2 through 6. If a player's hand is loaded with high value cards, he has the potential to win more blackjacks, which is beneficial to him as payout for a blackjack is 3:2. In blackjack, card counting involves deciding the ratio of high cards to low cards. There is no memorizing of the cards in the hand; only, each card is accorded a value. A running total is maintained to keep track of the play. The player will raise his bets if he receives cards of high value as this increases his odds of winning blackjack.
Various Card Counting Systems
In the simplest form of card counting, high cards are valued at -1 while low cards are valued at +1. If the running count of the deck is on the higher side, it is presumed there are more number of high value cards remaining in the deck which is of great benefit to the player. Such card counting systems that use only positive and negative value of 1 are the single level systems or level 1 systems.
Multilayered systems for card counting give different values to the various cards like +2, +3,-2 or -3. Although these provide an accurate estimate of player advantage, they are difficult to use while playing. However, these will enable the player to make an informed decision, the strategy to be used while hitting, standing or doubling down.
Card counting systems are classified as balanced and unbalanced counting systems. In the balanced card counting, the total point value in a card deck with 52 cards will add up to 0. It is the opposite in the unbalanced card system where this does not happen. Balanced card counting systems in blackjack require you to change from running count to true count. This system works perfectly in a blackjack game using a single deck. With multiple decks however, there are other considerations like the number of decks, etc. to be considered along with the penetration levels of the deals.
Unbalanced card counting systems in blackjack take into account the number of decks being used, which compensates for multiple decks. A balanced counting system will begin at 0, but the unbalanced counting system will start with the number corresponding to the multiple decks being used in the game.
